The "Oops"

Date - Summer 2000?

A vicious 5-handed game is under way. Bob picked, and was cracked. The second-to-last trick is being played, and Bob still hasn't taken a trick. Now I don't know how the rest of you play, but in this game if the picker doesn't take a trick, the partner does not pay. A no-tricker rap in 5-handed would cost the picker 18, the absolute most you could ever lose. Back to the trick - fail is led, which Bob has. The partner is on the end. The fourth card played is a low diamond. The partner can take the trick with the jack of diamonds, but since there are no points on the table, taking this trick will not get them schneider. The partner fails off and lets the trick go. The last trick is played, which Bob loses to a higher queen. Bob's been no-tricked, and the opposing team erupts in cheers! But when Bob notices the jack that came out of the partner's hand on the last trick, Bob instantly turns on the partner and asks him why he didn't take the 4th trick? The parter can only reply, with a truly awful attempt to act innocent, "oops".
